Find tips on how to write your own marketable Misery Memoir in this month's Writers' Forum

Writers' Forum's January issue features Lorena Goldsmith's article on how to write a marketable misery memoir, offering tips on what to put in and, more importantly, what to leave out. She covers the craft of building the good, the bad and the ugly characters, how to write a realistic story and how to achieve a convincing style. Here is one of Lorena's tips: "The reader should form a powerful connection with you because you are vulnerable and exposed, but this vulnerability needs to be shown, not told. Let the image of your vulnerability grow organically in your story, don't state it."

You can also find advice on how to write a good travel book from award-winning Rory Maclean, how to pull out a smashing celebrity interview, how to win £800 in writing prizes and much more.

You can find Writers' Forum in your local WH Smith and any good newsagent. Visit Writers' Forum website to find out more.

Our latest Success Story: A Three Book Deal for Boji by Robert Alan-Haven

Boji is an allegory about finding one's place in the world. Boji, the solitary bottlenose dolphin, loves interacting with humans. His adventures of surviving and trying to find his sense of belonging, by finding a pod of his own as well as keeping his relationship with humans, are described in this beautifully written, deeply touching, highly original book.

Robert Alan-Haven sent us the manuscript for assessment in 2008, following a few rejections from literary agents. We have worked with Robert and improved the book at the level of structure (repositioned some key elements, for instance, a wild attack scene placed at the very beginning of the book), pace (revised slow-paced scenes in the second half of the book), plot (repositioned an apparently minor fact in the first half of the book, which gains key importance in the second half, creating a twist in the plot) and characters (improved consistency of physical appearance and personality traits of main characters).

In November 2009 Robert contacted directly new publishers Peak Publish and they happily offered him a three book deal. Boji's launch took place at Country Book Shop in the picturesque village of Bakewell, in the Peak District, on 2nd of December 2009.

Huge congratulations to Robert and we can't wait to see the following two books in print.
